The Challenge
For nearly two centuries, 36 Lewis Street stood as a prominent fixture in downtown Hartford, evolving from an 1840s Greek Revival residence to a well-known restaurant and an after-hours nightclub before ultimately sitting vacant. As part of Hartford's last intact 19th-century residential streetscape and a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places, the challenge was finding a way to rescue the property from disuse and return it to a vibrant, functional purpose without losing its unique architectural heritage.
The ODG Approach
Driven by the belief that historic buildings tell the vital story of a community, O'Connell Development Group acquired the property to serve as its next long-term steward, capitalizing on a thoughtful historic rehabilitation that successfully returned the building to its original residential intent.
The Result
The revitalized building now features six distinctive townhouse-style apartments that perfectly balance modern living with the property's rich history. Key historic architectural elements, including the Italianate design details added to the property in the 1860s, have been carefully preserved to honor the structure's 19th-century origins. By returning 36 Lewis Street to its roots as a residence, the property remains a living, breathing part of the Lewis Street Historic District, ensuring this landmark will continue to play an important role in downtown Hartford’s ongoing revitalization for generations to come.
